History
IPPFAR was founded in 1971 in Tema, Ghana, by representatives from eight countries – Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Mauritius. From these humble beginning, we are now recognized as champions in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights. Today, our Member Associations serve over 6 million clients, mostly vulnerable and marginalized communities, through 2,800 clinics and service delivery points.
Through our membership in the global Federation (IPPF) , we adhere to international policies and standards that give us credibility, while our regional character allows us to form partnerships with international, regional and sub-regional institutions to tackle the continent’s growing reproductive health challenges.
Our Federation is still leading a ‘brave and angry’ stance with regard to people’s right to access to good sexual and reproductive health care and services.
As these important choices and freedoms are seriously threatened, we are needed now more then ever.
